BMW 5 Series Review, Specs, Price

In production since 1972, the German automaker’s 5-series sedan is currently into its sixth generation and is BMW’s second best-selling model. However, with increasing competition from the likes of Audi and Mercedes, has forced BMW to come up with its latest 2017 BMW 5 Series and is likely to be released around late 2016.

2017 BMW 5 Series – Innovations in the Dashboard, Storage, and Safety Features

This is where Audi is always ahead. The A6 boasts an overall length of 194.2 inches, thereby providing enough interior cabin space. With its 5-series, BMW must be looking to near this dimension. The spy shots clearly suggest that 2017 BMW 5 Series has enhanced its wheelbase and length.

Also, BMW is likely to use an aluminium-intensive body frame blended with high strength steel and carbon fiber. This will reduce the sedan’s overall curb weight and allow better fuel consumption.

To be released as a 2017 model, expect BMW to top here as well and give a reason for its high price. The sedan will be equipped with all the latest technical installations like adaptive cruise control and forward collision alert system. Also, expect rain sensing wipers to enhance visibility and pedestrian detection system to avoid a collision.

The sedan may also feature front and rear parking sensors along with tires pressure monitoring system, all feeding back data to its infotainment unit.

As of now, no detailed specifications of design are available from BMW as the car was tested under heavy camouflage and tinted screens. However, expect 2017 BMW 5 Series to be more tapered and wider with BMW exclusive grille and a stylish finish. On the looks department, it is safe to predict that BMW 5 series 2017 will be way ahead than Audi A6 and Mercedes E-class.

2017 BMW 5 Series – Main Power Production Unit

Both A6 and E-class sedans come with 2.0-liter turbocharged engines in their base versions. This is where BMW is expected to nose ahead. BMW 5 Series 2017 may come with the automaker’s latest 3.0-liter modular turbocharged engine. A higher version could house a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine. Both engines are to be mated with the eight-speed automatic transmission system.

With these, expect 2017 BMW 5 Series to reach a top speed of more than 130 mph. Power output will be more than Audi’s 333 hp. Also, acceleration from 0 to 60 mph will take less than 4.6 seconds.

With BMW, the possibility of a hybrid powertrain is always on the cards. Audi and Mercedes are yet to produce a hybrid sedan in this price range, and BMW may look to grab the market in this section. The sedan may house a combination of 2.0-liter four-cylinder fuel engine capable of delivering 240 hp and a 95 hp electric motor. Both mated with eight-speed automatic.

What this will do is improve the EPA rating of 2017 BMW 5 Series. The vehicle may have a rating of over 22 mpg in city and 30 mpg on the highway.

2017 BMW 5 Series – Expected MSRP and Availability

The prototype was seen testing its engines near BMW factories. The price of 2015 5-series started at around $50,900. Hence, expect BMW 5-series 2017 to cost more. With Audi A6 starting at $48,500 and Mercedes E-class at $53,000, find out what all BMW has to come with in order to regain its best-seller status.
